WEST METRO. Bernard's is located in the Chestnut Hill Mall and offers a fine dining option for shoppers or those seeking out of the ordinary Asian cooking. The menu consists of Chinese cuisine with a modern flair as the chefs manage to turn out dishes that go beyond expectations of what Chinese food has been traditionally. Try the black bean shrimp. Occasionally, guests are treated to live music and temporary art shows. An outdoor dining area is available during the warmer months.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Billy Tse's has something for everyone with a menu that hails from China, Thailand, and Vietnam. All three cuisines can be found under one roof, and all three are done quite well. This spot is a good choice for quiet conversation, and the dining room is relaxing with large windows that face the street. Free valet parking is an extra bonus, and delivery is available on a limited basis.

CAMBRIDGE. A nod to the grandeur of the Ming Dynasty, this Chinese restaurant between Harvard and Porter Squares is an eye-pleaser thanks its sharp, clean lines and temple-inspired elements. Changsho is far more than a pretty scene, though, and its meticulously-prepared regional dishes have bedazzled palates from all over the city. On Sundays, the buffet brunch is not to be missed ­ if for no other reason than sampling what may just be Cambridge's most delicious dim sum.

CHINATOWN. Chau Chow City is just the sort of place you'd expect to find in Chinatown, and its fine reputation is recognized by business types, in-the-know tourists, and neighborhood locals alike. The basic decor is completely overshadowed by traditional Chinese dishes of shrimp, pork, and chicken. Lobster dumplings and rice crepes packed with shrimp also draw raves. Plus, according to regulars, Chau Chow's dim sum can hold its own against anyone else's in the city.

BROOKLINE. This Chinese house has been serving up great Chinese eats of the Mandarin-Szechuan variety to Brookline locals for years and has earned quite a following. The menu has a good selection of beef, pork, chicken, and vegetable dishes, but don't let the Peking duck, chicken with peanuts, or orange flavored beef escape your notice when you're making your decision. Chang's has an open floor plan with plenty of seating. Outdoor dining area available as well.
