FENWAY DISTRICT. This pub's rather unusual name means "new beginning" in Gaelic and replaces its former name, RíRá. The spot's a combination Irish bar and dance club, which means drinks such as Guinness are coupled with dance tunes that range from hip-hop to disco and reggae. Typical bar fare (burgers and such) is available every night except Sunday, and for singles, it's a great meet-and-greet spot.

BEACON HILL. This neighborhood pub doesn't offer a lot in the way of ambiance or charm, but it does offer locals a spot to hang out with friends and chat about sports, politics, girlfriends, boyfriends, and whatever comes to mind while relaxing with a round or two of beer.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Ornamental artifacts and live Irish folk music set the scene at this downtown pub, and walls are decked with framed photos of Emerald Isle locations and people. Patrons enjoy hanging out at the large bar and ordering one of the many tap beers. A menu of American dishes and traditional Irish fare is available should you get hungry, and a big-screen television airs basketball, football and baseball games.

SOMERVILLE. Located in Somerville, this area Irish pub is a standing favorite with the Cambridge crowd. It delivers plenty of dark Guinness, popular weekend brunches, and all the charms-n-trappings of a traditional brogue bar. The eats are quite good, and their heartier dishes like Guinness beef stew, bangers and mash and shepherd's pie are, indeed, worthy of song. A nice mix of draught and bottled beer, wine, and cider is also available. Best of all, the Burren features live traditional Irish music every night. You'd be hard-pressed to find better ­ and 'tis free, laddie.

BEACON HILL. The place where "everybody knows your name" (originally the Bull and Finch Pub) is a must for many first-time tourists! Although the interior isn't quite like the famous TV set, they do have a gift shop with memorabilia from the show. The menu offers sandwiches, pastas and salads ­ many named for "Cheers" characters. Favorites include "Cheers" burgers, buffalo wings and award-winning Bloody Marys. Even if you don't drink, stop in for coffee and savor the charm and, perhaps, a slice of Boston cream pie!
